Step 2: Create minimal content for course before the quarter starts

  • Establish Overall Course Structure: Create a Canvas course space utilizing modules to organize the material either by week, topic, or another category appropriate to your course. Identify main communication channels for students:
    • Establish any general Q/A Discussion Boards that are integrated into your communication plan
    • Establish any announcements that can be scheduled ahead of time
  • Create Mini-presentations/assignments: targeted video and/or audio recordings (15 min or less in length) that replace a fraction of typical in-person lectures that are bundled with small tasks/assignments to reinforce student’s learning. Tasks/assignment can be individual or group and include mini-quizzes, writing reflections/analysis, discussion board activities, etc.. Using a mixture of video and audio and different styles of assignments helps maintain engagement with the course material. These bundles can serve a similar purpose as in-class participation activities.
  • Create Learning Assessments (summative): pre-populate any summative assessments, such as online exams/quizzes, writing assignments, group projects. Where appropriate, divide large projects into appropriate smaller pieces and map these out within the Canvas course structure.
